McInnes, who has just over a year to run on his current contract, has guided Aberdeen to the League Cup final, the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup and also second place in the Scottish Premiership.

Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne is now ready to offer McInnes a bumper new deal to secure the manager's long-term future and ward off any potential suitors.

"I'm very conscious of the reputation Derek has and how it is growing," Milne told the Sunday Mail. "We'll need to work hard to make sure Derek stays here for a substantial period of time.

"I don't think Derek wants to be viewed as a one-year success.

"He wants to take Aberdeen back to the top of the Scottish game and have a regular presence in Europe.

"Derek has convinced players to re-sign and make a commitment. I think Derek's approach is the same and he has to take the lead and make the same commitment. We're confident he is committed."
