The promising 17-year-old playmaker has agreed an 18-month deal with the Championship outfit.
He was expected to be on the move in January after attracting interest from numerous Premier League and Football League clubs.
With Bournemouth having prevailed in the race to secure his services, he is now expected to work with their first team squad while turning out for their development side.
Whitfield cannot wait to get started, with the youngster having had to be patient in his efforts to step up the League ladder.
He told the Cherries' official website: "It's taken a while to get sorted, but I'm really happy to be a Bournemouth player.
"Eddie (Howe) was a big part of why I decided to come down here because of the way he coaches and his teams play.
"It's a big move for me, but that will make it easier for me and help me improve as a player.
"It's a really exciting time for me. I just want to try and impress the manager, do well for the development squad and hopefully something will happen for me in the first team."
