nepgunner - your current demise? How old are you, 16? Arsenal have been below 5th in the league lots of times, you know. And the club didn't have 70 million to spend in those days. I'd say that it is a manager sacrificing his career for short sighted supporters who boo at any opportunity which is leading to the club's demise. The way the supporters treat virtually all the ex players probably has something to do with why players are quick to want to move on as well.

Funny, when I look, no Arsenal manager has a better win % than Wenger since 1934. Amazing how supporters think the club is entitled to the success that Wenger himself has got them used to. Arsenal could not have been the 4th most valuable club in the world before Wenger. Wenger sacrificed his career for the good of the club and, now, impatient supporters who are either too young or too blinkered to remember the years before Wenger are now calling for his head. His time at Arsenal will be the making of the club, if things like FPP actually are properly implemented, if they are not, he has still shown how to run a club, how to entertain supporters and how to make football a more interesting game in this country than it was before he came here. He's improved a lot of things. Not being an Arsenal supporter, I'd happily exchange him for Rodgers or Hodgson with England. Apart from Man Utd, I don't see who wouldn't take Wenger instead of their manager. The man is class, his critics less so.

@texan gooner...kindly either do some research or be updated before you type wenger love notes. Ivan, Board, PHW have repeatedly said there is money for the gaffer to spend - which is now believed to be in the region of 70M pounds and will definitely be bolstered with the enhanced TV rights money from next season. It has been an established fact now that Wenger controls our "socialist" wage structure and every ins & outs in the club. Its Wenger's stubbornness to cut diamonds out of every charcoal you could possibly find in France and Africa that has lead to our current demise. Its not that the fans do not appreciate him trying to balance the books for the club and keep it from future disasters. Its his recent ego trip to prove everyone wrong when it was much easier to do the obvious that has left most fans riling. Ironically, Wenger is a conundrum which only he himself can decide ATM with the power he has at the Arsenal FC. So don't worry, your dear Wenger is going nowhere until he himself decides to.

@highburyJD, I think Kisstopher73 has a point. At a competitive club, poor performers are either motivated to improve or they are sold. But at arsenal, poor performers are given contracts that don't match their value to the team, picked week in week out and the vey worst that could happen to them is that they are loaned to another top flight club until their contract expires. Would Vermaelen still be starting every game this season if he was playing under Sir Alex? Or Mourinho? Would they let the likes of Bendtner and Denilson wind down their contracts in semi retirement?

Do turkeys vote for Christmas. You have the shop steward (Vermaelen) defending the long long list of overpaid mediocrity that is the arsenal squad. How many of the likes of Djourou, Squiallaci, Mannone, Chesney, etc etc are really worth £45k plus a week, over half of what arsenal's top wage bracket. It's no wonder RvP left. His salary should have been 15x that of these also rans and they should have paid for it by being on less than £20k/week or shipping out.

EIGHT years without any major silverware cannot be labelled "short - term". Its two years shy of a decade! In the last decade - the US elected its first black president, UK officially entered a recession, Google indexed 1 trillion unique URLs, Smoking is banned in most public area (!!!), iPhone is released, unmanned drones are used to attack remote targets, Michael Jackson passed away, Boston Red Sox won their first World Series after WW1, first human face transplant is done in France...you get my drift...its definitely not short term!

Kisstopher73 and the likes should clarify who they expect to take over at Arsenal? The problem is primarily the lack of financial firepower to keep our best players and attract suitable replacements. If Wenger leaves which big name coach do you expect to take over??? Whoever comes in will want assurances about the size of the transfer kitty! The Board will still not spend and then some of our nutjob fans will realize that we have been competitive all along because of Wenger!!! If you want change force the Board and ownership to change. If they come out saying publicly that we are ready to spend a 100 million quid and Wenger doesn't strengthen the squad and we end up trophyless, By all means then start your Wenger out campaign and you will get a lot of Arsenal fans behind you. Just because you want a change don't go after the soft target which is not the real cause of the problem. It all started with Dein's resignation and if you want an improvement force the Board to loosen the purse strings. Be careful what you wish for! Cause Wenger out with the same Board could result in a mid-table Arsenal and maybe a relegation battle or two. Then you would look back at this as the glory days when we played in the Champions league!! Board out first and then Wenger. At least that's how I feel!!

You got Arsenal on one hand who stick with the same manager but win sweet FA and then you have Chelsea who win trophies and Titles but go through managers too quickly, if only there was a happy medium eh? One thing though, the Arsenal fans are surely not happy.
