Last summer Arsenal pursued Gonzalo Higuain before he moved to Napoli - after which point Wenger turned his attention to Mesut Ozil, who arrived in a club record deal from Real Madrid.
Without another forward, Giroud was left to lead the line and he has had his best season in England since arriving at Arsenal with 15 goals in his 34 starts - but Wenger admits he has probably played him too much, due to the fact there was little back-up available.
Wenger admitted earlier this week he would like to add 'two or three' players and he has now confirmed one of those will be a forward, but insists he does not yet have a firm target.
"Maybe we have over-played him at some stage," he said of Giroud.
"There is perhaps room for an attacking player who can play in a different position to Giroud. Someone who can play with him as well.
"But I do not know yet who will be on the market."
