Dawkins: New face at Villa

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert will have no hesitation in immediately calling up new signings Yacouba Sylla and Simon Dawkins despite their lack of Barclays Premier League experience.

Lambert confirmed midfielder Sylla, signed from Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot, and on-loan Tottenham winger Simon Dawkins will be part of the squad for tomorrow's encounter at Everton.

The former Norwich boss is hoping the duo will help Villa win their fight to avoid relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

Lambert said: "The two of them are ready to go. I wouldn't have any fear about throwing them in, whether it is tomorrow against Everton or West Ham next weekend.

"The lad Sylla will come in and will give us something we don't have with a bit of steel. He'll give us something in the middle of the pitch we haven't got.

"He will get stuck right in and you need players to do the dirty work.

"Simon can play anywhere. He will surprise people with the way he plays the game. He will create and make things happen.

"He can play anywhere across the middle. He had a spell in America (with San Jose Earthquakes) where he has been incredible. He's been in great form."

Lambert was given £23 million to bring in new players last summer but is philosophical about his lack of spending power during January.

He said: "I have said before if I could have got a Lionel Messi or someone like that I would have done it!

"The finances dictate what we can do and that's the reality of it."

Lambert insists he received no offers for any players who may have been surplus to requirements.

He said: "There were no offers for anyone. There was nothing. I can't get people to phone me but there was nothing there."
