Paul Lambert: Hoping for a morale-boosting victory

And Lambert insists eh will have no qualms about throwing midfielder Yacouba Sylla and winger Simon Dawkins into action at Goodison Park.

He knows the importance of Villa ending a run of seven games without a victory which has seen them drop into the Barclays Premier League bottom three.

Lambert is aware Villa have to produce over 90 minutes the level of performance evident during the second half of the 2-1 loss to Newcastle in midweek.

He said: "There is still belief amongst the players. The players should be upbeat after the second half against Newcastle.

"If you're going to have a cloud over you then you may as well throw the towel in right away. I believe they can do it (get out of trouble). We spoke about things and they've been pretty positive.

"That's the way to play football, the way we played against Newcastle second half. We know we've got to sustain that level for 90 minutes.

"If we do get a knock, you don't have to panic and keep going. But in the final analysis we lost the game and that's all that matters, is winning."

Lambert admitted: "Winning covers a multitude of sins, it always does, and if you play poor and win, you'd take it.

"You'd settle for that, playing poor and winning. I know you are in the entertainment business but sometimes that doesn't get you anywhere. If you win, everyone goes away happy.

"We have to drive ourselves out of the position. We have to get out of it and have to fight to get out of it."

Sylla has joined Villa from French Ligue 2 side Clermont Foot while Dawkins has signed on loan from Tottenham.

Lambert said: "The two of them are ready to go. I wouldn't have any fear about throwing them in, whether it is tomorrow against Everton or West Ham next weekend.

"Sylla will come in and will give us something we don't have with a bit of steel. He'll give us something in the middle of the pitch we haven't got.

"He will get stuck right in and you need players to do the dirty work.

"Simon can play anywhere. He will surprise people with the way he plays the game. He will create and make things happen.

"The lad is unknown and sometimes that's a good thing because you don't know what you are going to get.

"He can play anywhere across the middle. He had a spell in America [with San Jose Earthquakes] where he has been incredible. He's been in great form."
