Agbonlahor's final-day target

Gabriel Agbonlahor: Scored the winner against Reading

The 26-year-old striker gave his side's chances of staying up a major boost last Saturday by scoring the winner in the 2-1 victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium.

The result pulled them out of the relegation zone and Agbonlahor is now hoping Villa build on it and secure safety long before their campaign-ending trip to Wigan Athletic on May 19.

"I don't want to be going to Wigan with 90 minutes to save our season," he said. "We are looking to get the results we need way before then.

"I have seen some of those final-day dramas over the years and they have been ridiculous. We don't want to be involved in any of that. If it takes us to the final game to survive, so be it, we will do whatever it takes to stay up. But personally I'm not looking at that scenario.

"I want us to get the results we need to stay up much sooner. Our fate is in our own hands now and that is the way we want it to stay."

Despite their perilous league predicament, Agbonlahor insists there is confidence within the Villa camp and believes it is possible to win all of their remaining nine games, even though one of them is against Manchester United.

"We have to look at every game as one we need to win," he added. "There's no reason why we can't do that, even against United.

"If we have that mentality I think we will be OK. We are playing well and, if we carry on the way we have been over the last four or five games, there is no reason why we can't get results anywhere.

"If you go into games wanting to win, then if you get a disappointing result you might still end up with a draw. At least you are another point closer to safety."
