Villa battled relegation for most of the season before finishing five points above the drop zone thanks to a run of five wins from their last 10 games.

Lambert said: "Some of the lads now have played over 30 Premier League games, so they'll know what to expect next year. It augurs well for the future. The philosophy is set for the future and we'll keep driving it on.

"You have to start on the front foot every game, you can't relax in the Premier League, it's a very demanding league."

Christian Benteke's 23 goals were a massive factor in the club's survival and Lambert is keen to keep the Belgian striker at Villa Park.

The Villa boss said: "We've been speaking for the last few weeks so we'll just see what happens. I think it's important we keep the nucleus of the lads that are here and add to that, not just one individual."

Benteke's suspension for the final game of the season allowed Darren Bent a rare start in the 2-2 draw at Wigan and he took his chance with a first Premier League goal since September.

Lambert declined to comment on whether it will be Bent's last goal for the club, saying: "I'll sit down with everybody next week and we'll speak about everything.

"Every club will be busy in trying to do things. But we've set a standard that we've got to try and maintain and get better. To do that you've got to try to keep building the squad and keep the belief in our own philosophy, what we're trying to do."

icky van Wolfswinkel's remarkable record of one goal from one game at least deserves an honourable mention. And I'm willing to bet that at least one of Costa, Ulloa or Enner Valencia will earn a place on the list by the end of the season. Probably not Costa
