Despite a difficult campaign, Paul Lambert's men picked up 17 points from their remaining ten games to claim a 15th-place finish and ensure another year of top-flight football at Villa Park.

In his debut season at Villa, Vlaar was made captain in the absence of Stiliyan Petrov, and he believes that his team-mates can continue to progress.

"I look back with pleasure to the last months. The results improved a lot," he told Villa's official website.

"We won a lot of games. We want to go on with that.

"The team improved and the way we played together got better. You could see that with the results. We want that to continue next season.

"We are excited. We are looking forward. The fans got some great moments in the last few months and they want to see more of that. We want to give them more of that.

"We have optimism and positivity. We have to believe in ourselves. We did a lot more of that at the end of last season. We have to do that again in this season. We have to see what's possible."

Lambert has already boosted his squad with a number of signings and Vlaar is confident that the new additions will further Villa's chances.

He added: "We have some new players. They are really good players. I hope we are going to have a lot of fun with them.

"We look forward to a better season. That's where we start now."
