Teenage striker Danny Rose's first senior goal secured the victory over 10-man Burnley.
Rose came off the bench to score the winner five minutes from time when keeper Brian Jensen could only touch Scott Golbourne's overhit cross onto the crossbar and back into the 19-year-old's path.
The visitors were forced to play the majority of the tie with 10 men after midfielder Brian Stock was sent off for his second yellow on 37 minutes for a cynical shirt pull on Jim O'Brien.
