Flitcroft backs Barnsley squad

Barnsley manager David Flitcroft is convinced his current first-team squad is good enough to escape relegation this season.

The Tykes clinched a deserved point thanks to teenage striker Danny Rose's late equaliser at Ipswich on Saturday in Flitcroft's first game as permanent boss, but remain second from bottom and four points from safety.

"The players are certainly up to it," said Flitcroft. "Performance levels all season have been very good. We've now just got to start turning performances into results and that's key and the details we'll assess are key to getting us three points.

"We need to get those wins, we need to build on the momentum we've already started. The momentum's a key factor. The confidence that comes from that will come through.

"It's about key details and making sure everyone knows their job in hand and that's something we're striving towards and we have been doing since the Peterborough game.

"When you set out on any challenge, if you fear it, then you'll fail. Certainly this is a challenge in my life that I'm relishing and I know the players are good enough."

Flitcroft is hoping to strengthen his squad before the end of the January transfer window, but conceded that would mainly be done through the loan system.

He took charge of his fourth game in the draw at Portman Road, and has been working on possible player targets long before being appointed permanent boss earlier this month.

"Without a doubt, we're looking to strengthen," said Flitcroft. "I've certainly been planning for when I took the job on. You're never not planning. All December, we've got targets.

"Sometimes those alter. We're well into the window now so we've lost quite a lot of it, but there's still a lot of quality and good players out there who we can hopefully recruit to make us better.

"We're looking at the loan market. We've got an excellent core of players who want to be a part of this challenge.

"Adding some freshness to the squad will give everyone a lift and I'm looking forward to bringing two, maybe three players, into the squad."

Flitcroft said it was likely that some players would also be leaving Oakwell before the January 31 deadline.

He added: "The next two weeks are key to what we try to achieve here. There could possibly be players going out to benefit the club and the players and there'll certainly be recruits coming in."
