The Blues are still without a win at home this season and Clark was relieved with the point at St Andrew's after goalkeeper Darren Randolph kept Ipswich at bay following Christophe Berra's first-half goal.

For much of the game Ipswich appeared as if they were heading for only their second win of the season after Berra scored on his debut after 36 minutes.

Birmingham refused to concede defeat, though, and staged a late revival with Scottish international Chris Burke scoring a characteristic equaliser late in the second half.

It was the first goal Birmingham have scored at home this season, which in itself highlights their problems.

Clark said: "At least in the second half the players were true to themselves as individuals.

"We did not create any chances in the first half but we had a go in the second half and had a bit of luck with a deflection to give us the equaliser."

Birmingham were deeply indebted to a five star performance from their goalkeeper Randolph, who made three superb saves including a first-half effort from David McGoldrick he finger-tipped onto the post shortly after Berra's goal.

Clark paid credit to his goalkeeper for helping Birmingham to pick up a valuable point.

He said: "He (Randolph) has continued his impressive start at the club.

"The whole package with him has been excellent, coming for crosses and his distribution enabled us to try and play on the counter attack.

"He has shown everyone he is a first class acquisition and I feel I have obtained a good package. We are absolutely delighted with him.

"The Ipswich game was frustrating. We did not show our best qualities as we were too negative.

"It was no coincidence that Chris Burke obtained the second half equaliser. He works every single day to perfect scoring such goals."

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy hailed Berra's performance after he found the back of the net.

McCarthy said: "He took his goal well and has been terrific for us.

"He is a really good defender. I've said all along that I'm delighted to get him in on a free transfer and he scored a goal as he should because he always attacks the ball."

McCarthy, who made five changes going into the game, said: "I thought we were excellent and deserved to win.

"We came up against a goalkeeper in Randolph who is in outstanding form and they had the get-out-of-jail freak goal.

"I hope we have get a slice of luck like that at some stage in the season.

"Honestly, it feels as if we have been beaten."

McCarthy also singled out Aaron Cresswell who has attracted interest from other clubs.

He said: "I don't think anything will happen before the transfer window closes.

But if anyone offers a shed-load of money and he wants to go he will go.

"We don't want him to leave because I rate him the best left sided player in the Championship and I think he can play in the Premier League."
