Rhodes happy with goals return

Blackburn striker Jordan Rhodes claims he has already eclipsed his expectations for the season after firing 22 goals so far this campaign.

Jordan Rhodes: Riding high in scoring charts

In a year of almost unremitting gloom at Blackburn, Rhodes has been the one shining light.

His equaliser against Blackpool on Friday was Rhodes' 22nd for the club he joined in August for a club record £8million.

Add in the two he got before leaving Huddersfield and Rhodes is up to third in the Championship top scorers chart.

He still has eight games to go too. And he needs to keep finding the net if Rovers are not to get sucked into a relegation scrap, just a year after exiting the Premier League.

Mild-mannered Rhodes is determined to help.

But if he does not get another goal, he would regard the campaign as a personal success.

"I have been delighted with my goals return this year," said the Scotland international.

"My aim was a goal every two games and I have already surpassed that.

"Strikers love scoring goals and it is fantastic to be on 24 goals with eight games remaining. Now I just want to remain upbeat, keep a smile on my face and get on with things."

For Rhodes, scoring goals must be easier than remaining upbeat.

When he elected to join Blackburn following his record-breaking year in League One at Huddersfield, he expected to join a squad determined to reclaim their top-flight berth.

Instead, Rovers' season has spiralled out of control.

"We cannot let all the stuff that happens off the field concern us," said Rhodes.

"We have a duty to remain loyal to the people who have been working with you all season on the training pitch. The fans come to support us but they only see what we do for 90 minutes on a football field.

"We come into work every day and see the receptionist or the physios or the kit men. We have to give our best for them.

"We should never forget this is the best job in the world. Circumstances might be a bit different to the norm at the moment. But these things happen.

"Nothing surprises you in football but it is still a great job."

Friday's draw with Blackpool has not done much to ease anyone's fears about the potential for a second successive demotion, and a return to the third tier of English football for the first time in over three decades.

Yet Rhodes remains optimistic. And not even an Easter Monday trip to champions-elect Cardiff is going to change that.

"Cardiff are the league leaders and they are flying high," said Rhodes.

"But we have been to Arsenal this season and got a result there so there is no reason why we can't go there, put our best foot forward and get something from the game."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
