The 24-year-old United States forward was once dubbed 'the next Pele' after bursting on to the scene at the age of just 14 when he became the youngest ever player to appear in a United States professional sport.

However, Adu's career path has not taken the upward trajectory many had predicted a decade ago and disappointing spells in Portugal, France, Turkey and Brazil led him to train with Blackpool earlier this year.

Adu spoke of his desire to one day play in England in an interview last month but it appears those ambitions will not be realised on the Lancashire coast.

"I've got plenty of players in that position," Ferguson, who has been handed the reins on a temporary basis following Paul Ince's axing, said.

"We gave Freddy the facility to come in and train and he's played a few games, but I'm strong enough in that position."
