Sub Joe Mason scored the only goal in stoppage time to snatch all three points at the John Smith's Stadium as they moved 12 points above the relegation zone.

Freedman said: "We got the result that a spirited and committed performance deserved."

Wanderers have now lost just once in 10 matches after a bad start to the campaign, and Freedman said: "We wouldn't have got this result four months ago.

"I took on this job 20 months ago and I said I wanted people here who were coming, not because we had been in the Premier League or because of the stadium, but because they wanted to play for the shirt.

"We know (we) have a resolute resilience and commitment among the players and we are playing good football."

Freedman admitted he had been tested by Bolton's poor early form, but said: "It's best that I go through that as a young manager.

"It's been a difficult time but we have always known the answers. We had to build very slowly and the chairman and the fans had to know that.

"We have built slowly and had to bring a few players in on loan and that's what we had to do to go forward."

Striker Mason, 22, on loan from Cardiff, scored his fifth goal of the season in the second minute of added time.

He has just two games left on his loan spell and Freedman said: "Joe will go back and that's how it is."

Danny Ward clipped the woodwork in the first half for Huddersfield before Chung-Yong Lee side-footed a shot against a post when he was unmarked in the box.

Oscar Gobern had a header cleared off the line for the home side and it looked like Lee's miss would prove costly. But deep into the four added minutes, Lee swung over a corner and Mason - a 71st-minute sub - connected brilliantly to fire home into the bottom corner.

Huddersfield manager Mark Robins was angry at his side's failure at the corner and said: "We did not defend a set play and that has cost us the point we had.

"The players have a responsibility to pick up their men and defend.

"You have to do your job but we didn't do that, and it's tough to take."

Huddersfield are now seven matches without a win and Robins added: "We battered them in terms of possession but we haven't seen the game through.

"Over the course of the season we haven't picked up enough points and it's the same old story.

"I am disappointed with the season so far after we made a bright start. We can't afford to continue in the same vein or we'll be looking over our shoulders.
