The Seagulls' top scorer starts a three-match ban after he was sent off for a reckless high challenge on Reading's Alex Pearce in Sunday's goalless draw.
With Craig Mackail-Smith and Will Hoskins still out injured and Ashley Barnes having only just returned from a spell out with a hip problem, Brighton are desperately short of firepower.
"We are always looking to improve the squad anyway," said assistant boss Nathan Jones.
"We have been looking to get a striker in to supplement the quality we have but it's finding ones who are better than what we've got that is the problem.
"They have to fit into our team structure, into the way we play and into the budget of the club. We don't just people in for the sake of it but we have targets.
"Until we get one of those we will rely on the players we've got."
