The defender was dismissed for a goal-line handball and, although Johnnie Jackson's penalty was missed, a Danny Haynes goal won it for the visitors.

Ref Robert Madley was booed throughout, but Dyche was more moderate in his assessment.

"I think the sending off is difficult," he said. "I've seen it again and it looks like the ball has hit him rather than him hit the ball. But what can you do?

"It's a tough call and you get away with some but we didn't. There were numerous other decisions as well.

"Referees have a tough job to do but we probably haven't had our fair balance over the last couple of weeks but you hope that evens itself out over the season."

Dyche could not fault his players, saying: "I thought they were fantastic. The standing ovation they got at the end was well deserved. When I came here I wanted to instil the pride and passion to wear the shirt and that was on show.

"We created a number of chances and took on the game with ten men. It's pleasing for me to see that the fans are seeing a team which not only plays good football but digs in as well."

till reckon Chelsea will go for Khedira as back up for Matic. I think it will turn out to be quite a Mourihno-y window: We'll see the squad players and youth in action pre-season, say things like well, we need not buy anybody and then the club will bid £60m for Pogba and send everybody on loan.

would love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting between Milner and Rodgers. I don't know if flies can count, but if they can then I would be counting the number of times Rodgers used the word outstanding in his attempts to get Milner to sign.

Reds and Arsenal chase Milner

ell, it wouldn't be a summer without Arsenal fans fretting over losing a key player, and United throwing their weight around and muscling in on transfer deals which are (apparently) near to completion. If we can't be entertained by the football on the pitch, let's enjoy the silly off-pitch soap opera of the transfer season. Hurrah!
