Davis has fallen down the pecking order in the battle for a central midfield place under Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino.

But Pochettino made nine changes to his side that was held by Sunderland on Saturday for the cup tie at Oakwell - and Davis was one of the players to benefit.

He responded with two goals as Saints ran out 5-1 winners.

Asked whether he felt he had put pressure on Pochettino to pick him for the Premier League match with Norwich, Davis told the club website: "Yeah, you just want to give the manager something to think about.

"It was obviously a good opportunity to do that, but there's strength in the squad because everybody is fighting for a place in the team.

"Competition for places is good so it does give the manager something to think about. Whoever has the shirt has to work hard to keep it."

Despite the scoreline Davis said Barnsley had made life difficult for them.

"People might look at the scoreline and say it was an easy game," he said.

"It was anything but as we had to work hard, but our attitude was spot-on, shone through and we got our reward. It was a good scoreline in the end."

e have the personnel. The trick is keeping them fit. Carrick and Blind have missed large chunks of the season, while the defence has been one muddled mess of intermittent stooges, all coming and going at various intervals thus far. We may be just short of title winning quality, but we're half way through. An injury crisis to either of the top two could change things. Optimistic, yes, but not unrealistic.

arish is the man to blame for this shambles. Pulis must be chuckling into his left over turkey sandwich. I pray this doesn't mean the Neil Warnock media machine will kick in now and he'll be back on the telly box.

e almost found a new way to lose, just when I thought it was getting boring Giroud does that. Although Arsenal are deservedly called 'soft' the entire midfield is out injured. Still must admit MU are managing to win despite a similar raft of absentees. Think the Gunners have good players but poorly coached.
