No UEFA rap for sarcastic Rio

Rio Ferdinand will not face disciplinary action from UEFA for sarcastically applauding Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

My god, 'borderline apartheid' now that takes the biscuit doesn't it? So someone who questions why 'pool fans are on a united link and then he likens this to apartheid - mate look up apartheid and see what that really is before you start spouting such nonsense. Rio should have been sanctioned for what it's worth, that was petulant and he really should be taken to task.

I, for one, was expecting a 3 game ban/a fine of some sort - and rightly so too. Like Nani's red card, I can understand why he did it, but it's the wrong thing to do. Disrespect towards the referee is becoming increasingly common and I think it's something that needs to be looked at in the game. How to do it? I don't know, but surely all these 'Respect' campaigns don't exclude match officials.

Disappointing. If he'd done it at the time of the card, it would still have been unacceptable but at least then he could have blamed the heat of the moment. The fact that he had the presence of mind not to risk getting a card for doing it during the match makes it worse for me. He should have calmed down by the end of the match but he just became more confrontational. Ferdinand really has a terrible attitude when it comes to showing respect to the authorities and that sort of attitude should be punished so as to show the world that that sort of behaviour is unacceptable.

As the leader of the Respect campaign, Rio's action were misguided and foolish. He should have received some sanction. This isn't the first such offence from Rio.

Very surprising. I thought they'd fine him, myself. I wasn't particularly impressed with the way he hand-clapped the referee after the game. Still, he shook the referee's hand so I can only guess that the match officials didn't include it in their match report, which is awfully decent of them. I was hurt to go out in the way we did, but you have to maintain some dignity, and show some respect. The last thing you want is your players taking the law into their own hands like Chelsea did a few years ago, screaming into the camera and generally acting like a bunch of kids in detention. I guess this can be filed under "at least everything didn't go against us, then".

fishcake, you appear to be mistaking my disgust at Ferdinand's behaviour and presuming it means I support everything that LFC players do. Unlike yourself, not all my opinions are automatically dictated by whether the player involved plays for my club or not. Are you really so incapable of seeing that such blatant aggressive and childish behaviour to a referee is completely wrong? As for the pop quiz, what is better...shooting someone in the head or shooting them in the chest? Point being...it doesn't really matter, they're both wrong and one isn't justified by being "not as bad" as the other...oh, and I pick the clapping the referee one vs a 'stamp' that wasn't definitely deliberate.

Pop quiz....whats worse a) clapping a ref (probably for the 'brave' decision he made at OT!) or b) stamping on an opponent becuase they knocked you out of Europe??? Tick tock?

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
