The Dutchman has been offering his response to comments made by Scotland coach, and former Bhoys boss, Gordon Strachan in which he suggested Celtic should be full of confidence heading into a meeting with a side who boast a number of players who 'haven't had a shave yet'.

De Boer acknowledges that Strachan was jesting about the average age of his team and insists his players require no added motivation heading into a must-win tie.

He is, however, convinced that Ajax will make their doubters eat their words by claiming a first European success of the season and keeping their Group H qualification hopes alive.

De Boer said in the Daily Record: "I'm glad Gordon said it because we will win this game. After the match in Glasgow I promised them we would have a different result at home.

"I'm convinced of that. I know it. And we'll win it by playing the same way we did in Glasgow.

"I think Gordon was speaking about us in a different context when he said that. He just said we are such a young team but he was maybe joking slightly. Suddenly, everyone takes it seriously.

"I won't use Gordon's comments as motivation. My players shouldn't need to search for motivation from another direction. You have to find it within yourself. It's weak if you have to be motivated by those kind of quotes."

De Boer added on the challenge Celtic will pose at the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday: "Celtic can be confident because they've achieved some good results in Europe in the past year, like beating Barcelona.

"But I saw good things from my side in Glasgow, so I'm confident we can get the three points.

"If we do, we'll be a point ahead of Celtic in the group so it's a crucial game. We know that for Celtic maybe a draw will be enough.

"But in Glasgow we created a lot of chances, we had a lot of good moments. So we're in good shape to take all three points."
