The midlands rivals are in different leagues financially, with Derby operating in the bargain basement when it comes to the transfer market, developing their own talent or signing young players from lower divisions. By contrast, Leicester spent in excess of £10million at the start of the season after being taken over by Thai owners.

"It would be nice to have a little bit of what they have been spending in the last year or so but we wouldn't swap our club for theirs," Clough told the media ahead of the televised game. "We have to work that bit harder and get everybody together as a team and have a good team ethic, which can get you an extra 10-20 per cent in football. That is the way we compete.

"We played against probably the best striker in the league in Southampton's Rickie Lambert on Saturday but Callum Ball, in three or four more years, could be another Rickie Lambert. We've just got to wait for him to get to that stage.

"Jeff Hendrick put in another mature performance against Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin, who cost Southampton a few bob, but it won't be long before he is as good as those two players - he isn't too far away now. It is one of the reasons that these Financial Fair Play rules are coming in, to encourage clubs to develop their own players. But we are doing that pretty successfully already."
