The former Bristol City and Lincoln centre-back, 29, made just five appearances under Simon Grayson's management last season - the last of which came on March 10.

McCombe's departure follows hot on the heels of fellow defender Antony Kay heading to MK Dons and Town boss Grayson told the club's official website: "Much like Antony Kay, Jamie is a senior player and needs first-team football at his age.

"It is only fair to allow players to go in search of first-team football when you can't offer it to them and his departure also helps our wage bill."
