New signing Chris Wood scored two goals on his debut, Anthony Knockaert also bagged a brace, while Ritchie De Laet and Martyn Waghorn completed the 6-1 triumph at the King Power Stadium.

The three points cemented their fifth spot in the Championship and Pearson said: "It was not a bad way to start the new year, was it?

"It was a very good team performance. We have had a tough run of late when our performances have not always got the points we deserved.

"But when you look at the Christmas and New Year period taken together, the only game we have lost we should have won. But we have done okay and we have hung on in there in what has been a tough period.

"The players have shown a lot of character. Chris Wood played a very positive part in what a was a very good team performance. His attributes fit the bill for a what we are looking for.

"He is a team player and works very hard and shows a lot of football intelligence as well. It is pleasing that that he has got off to such a good start but it is about the group.

"All our forwards have a lot of flair and potential and we now have a lot of options moving forward. It was a thoroughly professional performance.

"I was not surprised that Wood and David Nugent played well together because they are both good players. And the quality of the service to them was good as well. It gives us a real tonic at what is an important part of the season."
