Ferguson: We can beat the drop

Darren Ferguson: Urged Peterborough to maintain their fine form

Lee Tomlin bagged a brace and Tommy Rowe, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and George Boyd were also on target as Peterborough moved off the bottom.

Ferguson feels his side must maintain these high standards as they battle for survival in the remaining months of the season.

"We are on a decent run at the moment," he said. "We have got a lot of games (coming up), eight games in 25 days, and that is one of them out of the way.

"If we can play like that and defend as well as that I think we will be okay, I really do.

"I'm fully prepared, and I've told the players this, that I think it will go down to the last game. We are fully prepared for it and will meet it head-on.

"We will enjoy the challenge. We won't fail for commitment or mental approach to it and we will see where it takes us, if we have a performance like this and have that consistently you have got to have a right chance."

Boyd produced a fine individual display and Ferguson was full of praise for the forward, who remained at London Road after a deadline day move to Nottingham Forest fell through.

"I thought he was rubbish," Ferguson joked.

"I have not played him wide for a long, long time. We obviously know he can do it and I felt tonight was a good opportunity. He made three and scored one but it was also a very good team performance."

Still discussing Boyd, Ferguson added: "There is no situation at the moment in terms of he is our player.

"We had the whole shamble with the Forest thing and since then he has come back in, got his head down and is playing very well.

"He is a strong boy and it won't affect him mentally, whatever will be will be."
