The loan market may have shut without any further business being completed at St Andrew's, but Clark has already turned his attention to the next window of opportunity.

Those players set to be out of contract at the end of the season will be keen to sort themselves out with a new club, and managers are keen to get their squads finalised as quickly as possible in pre-season.

Taking that into account, Clark is looking to get as many potential new recruits as possible viewed in trial games - with a clash against Leeds on Tuesday allowing Birmingham to run the rule over Tottenham youngsters Jack Munns and William Ekong, among others.

"What we have done, and it's a really good idea from our development coach Richard Beale, is look at all the clubs around the country and see which ones have made early decisions about players to release," Clark explained in the Birmingham Mail.

"So we fixed up a trial game for those players and there were four or five who impressed us, enough to ask for permission if they could play in our development team and Tottenham were kind enough to allow us to play Jack on Tuesday.

"We won't be pursuing it further, but we have got other irons in the fire with other clubs.

"There's other boys who caught our eye in that trial game. It was a worthwhile exercise. We had 22 boys from different clubs, the majority of them from the Premier League.

"Now, it's thought they're not going to make the grade there with their clubs. But that's not to say they couldn't come and do the business for us. So we're having a good look as we plan ahead for next season."

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish
