The 28-year-old was a free agent after leaving Bristol City in the wake of their relegation from the Championship last season.

Gerken started his career with Colchester United and played more than 100 league games in seven years before a loan spell with Darlington.

He joined Bristol City for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2009 but lost his place in January when he made what turned out to be his last appearance for the club against Leicester in a 4-0 home defeat.

Gerken is reunited with two Ashton Gate team-mates at Ipswich - Cole Skuse and Paul Anderson - as well as ex-Colchester team-mate Anthony Wordsworth.

I

think all those names linked to United exits make sense. Kagawa has never really looked like hitting the form he had at Dortmund and Fellaini is radioactive after last season (even though I think he's been unfairly singled out for criticism). Nani and Anderson have had more than their fair share of chances so they are done, and Hernandez deserves better than warming a bench.

e'll be off to Spurs (or better) in January and I don't blame him. Looking forward to re-signing Grant Holt as his replacement though.
