The Bristol-born keeper joined Stoke in January for a fee in the region of £3.5million but was sent back to Birmingham on loan straight away.

During his time at St Andrews he made his senior international debut as part of an experimental side that beat Italy 2-1, becoming England's youngest goalkeeper, and he was also part of the Great Britain squad at the London Olympics.

But the 20-year-old is yet to force his way into Mark Hughes' first-team plans at the Britannia Stadium, where Asmir Begovic has been in such good form.

Barnsley will give him the chance of playing time from the start of his spell at Oakwell, with first-choice Luke Steele sidelined by a back injury, and he could make his debut at Leicester on Saturday.
