The Republic of Ireland defender did not make an appearance for Aston Villa last season due to an ongoing groin injury which required several bouts of treatment to fix.

He was released by Villa before subsequently signing for QPR having been a long-term target for manager Harry Redknapp.

QPR have yet to concede a goal during Dunne's nine appearances and the 34-year-old is relishing the opportunity to play regular football again.

However, the centre-half has confirmed that, if his recent injury problems flare up again, he will not stay at Loftus Road to simply collect his salary.

"I am enjoying myself," Dunne told the Daily Mail.

"Obviously, it has been a difficult time for the club but essentially it remains a good one. It was a blow losing Steve McClaren because he was a good coach who always came into work with a smile on his face. But it's about the players and I think we have some good ones.

"I'm not here to just pick up my wages. It's in my contract here that if my groin was to go then my contract will be cancelled in six weeks. I'll just walk away. There's no way I'm going to sit in the gym for another year."

Regarding last season, he added: "I was desperate to come back. I thought I was done. Over. Finished. That's the way it was. Going in every single day and it wasn't getting better. I thought, 'Do I really need this anymore?' Then I started thinking, 'What do I do?'

"As it was coming to an end, I realised I just wanted to play. It had been 15 months since I made a tackle. I wanted to get back involved.

"When I started training in April I was with the youth lads. It was what I needed but I didn't really enjoy it. So when I went away with Ireland I felt like I was back after playing 25 minutes in a friendly. I realised how much I had missed it."

ood lord that's got me unnecessarily excited. Damn you Storey. Cut to Liverpool being crushed under the wheels of Sparky's Stoke Machine and Firmino brought off the bench to no effect. It's the hope that kills you.

think he'll do quite well. My only reservation would be Kagawa, who had similar stats to Firmino in the bundesliga before he came, but time will tell.
