The former Leeds left-back, given an extended run in the side after an injury to Charlie Daniels, netted a stunning long-range effort as they won 4-2 at Birmingham on Saturday to delight his manager.
"Since he's come into the team we have scored a lot of goals from that sweet left peg," Howe told the club's official website.
"He's a set-piece specialist - we know about his left foot.
"I think his experience has been key for us. He knows how to manage games for us.
"He's been at the very highest level in world football. He's seen it and been there and done it and that can only help the players around him.
"He's been excellent for us defensively and he's been excellent from set plays, so it's great to see him score, and it's a fitting reward for his performances."
