Freedman won't plunder Palace

Dougie Freedman has told Sky Sports News he does not plan to raid Crystal Palace as he plots Bolton's immediate return to the Premier League.

The Scot left Palace last week to succeed Owen Coyle at Bolton and has set himself the target of achieving promotion next May.

Freedman faces a fight to fulfil that aim, with Wanderers 13 points behind leaders Cardiff and nine adrift of his previous club, but he is convinced Bolton already have the squad to bridge the gap.

Asked whether he would target Palace players he said: "Not as we speak right now. We have got a fantastic group of players at Bolton, strength in depth, and I don't need to look anywhere other than my own training ground.

"I've left Palace with wonderful young players in the team. They've done very well and I believe they should stay at Crystal Palace right now and keep doing what they're doing.

"I feel we've got the right squad of players, and once I go in and change the mentality of the group I believe we can climb the table. I don't feel ashamed or embarrassed to say promotion's something we're looking to do this year."

Freedman's decision to leave Palace mid-season risks wrecking his relationship with their supporters - and a hero status built on the goal which saved the club from relegation to the third tier in 2001.

He said: "I think the fans and me go back a long way, there's a lot of respect there. The time I had there will never be taken away, how we've been so close to each other. I just felt this club was right move at this stage of my career."
