Holloway: I felt 'detached'

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway has admitted he felt "detached" from his team as he served a two-match touchline suspension.

The 50-year-old was also fined £18,000 for improper conduct after berating the match officials during the opening-day clash with Tottenham, and he was banished to the stands for the defeats to Manchester United and Swansea.

But he has vowed to keep his emotions in check in future as he looks forward to returning to the dugout for Saturday's trip to Southampton.

"Thank God for that ban being over, it makes such a difference for me, you feel so detached and away from it," Holloway said.

"I know I am 50, but how bad was that (ban) for me? To sit there and feel so detached? You could argue I deserve it and my wife would say I do.

"The worst thing was reading back what the referee and the linesman wrote as I said it, and it is not very good.

"I will challenge anyone to be in my game as long as I have and to be my size - I am 5ft 7ins. You have to be competitive.

"I would say I was over-competitive and I get over-zealous, but you have to be calm. I have a lot to learn.

"You would like to think getting older you can mellow down a little, but I am in a competitive business where results are the only thing that counts at the end of the day."

Palace have won only one of their opening five fixtures since returning to the Premier League, although their performances have been encouraging.

"You have runs where you have to believe in yourself, not read what is written - you have to just bounce back," Holloway added.

"(Former Palace manager) Iain Dowie made a word up a few years ago, 'bouncebackability' and we certainly need that.

"There is nothing a win won't put right, so let's get going and build on it."

h Daniel. I could spend hours on this subject putting the world to rights. You can even take a step back and ask why football fans (and society in general) have this need to know that something will happen before it actually does. There are times this important, when it comes to things like war, food production and natural disasters. A man you've never met changing his job? Not so much.

reat article. Hits the nail on the head. Encapsulates why I don't read tabloid newspapers anymore. The only thing worse is the 'told you so first' headline when they get lucky.
