Wague, who helped Caen win promotion to Ligue 1 last season, is out of contract and his availability on a free transfer has alerted a number of clubs across Europe.

West Brom are thought to be leading the chase for Wague, with Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Norwich also in the race for his signature.

A number of French and Italian clubs are also thought to be chasing Wague and the 23-year-old is ready to sit down and weigh up his options after playing for Mali against Croatia this weekend.

The former France Under-19 international is aware of the interest from English clubs and he admits he would be keen on a move to England.

"I am aware of the offers from England and of course it is attractive for me to play there, but I also received proposals from Europe," Wague told Sky Sports.

"At the moment however, I have left my agents to do their work and I have been focusing on my duty with the national team.

"After I finish, we will carefully consider my options before deciding the next step in my career."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.
