Clough delighted with Russell

Derby manager Nigel Clough believes there is more to come from Johnny Russell after the striker inspired the Rams to a 3-0 win at Yeovil, whose boss Gary Johnson bemoaned his side's slow start.

Johnny Russell: Came in for praise from Nigel Clough

Johnny Russell: Came in for praise from Nigel Clough

Goals from Russell, Craig Bryson and Chris Martin handed County a second successive away victory in the Sky Bet Championship.

Clough hailed his side's display and tipped his summer signing from Dundee United for even greater things this season.

He said: "We're delighted to get three points away from home. I think we started the game well and dominated the first half.

"We waited around 40 minutes to score despite having a lot of possession, but we got another soon after our first. That second is as good as a team goal I think you will see all season and knocked the stuffing out of Yeovil.

"It's great when strikers get on the scoresheet and we had that today with Johnny Russell and Chris Martin. To score three great goals and get a clean sheet was brilliant.

"Johnny is still settling in but he's got a couple of goals already in the first four matches. There's plenty more to come from him. He's still getting used to his new team-mates and new surroundings.

"Winning away and keeping a clean sheet is a bit of a monkey off our back. We didn't win too many away last season but our home form was strong, but in the early weeks it seems to have reversed itself.

"I don't think Yeovil will be an easy place for teams to come, they will cause teams problems and you can see that with the way they knocked the ball around in the second half."

Russell opened the scoring in the 42nd minute with Bryson doubling the lead before the interval and Town manager Gary Johnson felt the one-two punch knocked the stuffing out of his team.

"I thought they started very brightly and we never handled that," he said. "They had a couple of bits of clever play that got them in.

"We changed our shape and thought 4-5-1 was going to be more positive than it was, but unfortunately it didn't work out for us. Some players freeze a little bit and do things very well in training, but all of a sudden it doesn't happen on the pitch.

"We gave it a go in the second half and put them under pressure, but the game was already won. The goals before half time were demoralising and we weren't quite good enough to get that goal back.

"It's a hard division and there are teams who are much bigger than us but I hope our fans aren't too disheartened. I hope they go and enjoy their Sunday lunch and let me sort it out."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

Wenger hails important win

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
