The pair were both sent to the stands after the disagreement on the touchline threatened to spill over but Wright, whose side prevailed thanks to a Stevie May effort, insists he was standing up for his players.

He said: "I've been brought up to respect people in all walks of life but when someone disrespects your team...

"Maybe I shouldn't have reacted but actually I'm quite glad I did because he shouldn't be making comments about my players.

"I will take my punishment and move on. He said something in the first half as well, which we let go. But that's by the by. We've got three points and that's all that matters."

Wright added: "We played football when we had to and dug in deep when we had to. I'm proud of them. They showed good character."

McNamara, who saw his side's five-match winning run end in front of home fans, was unavailable for comment and sent assistant Simon Donnelly to talk to the press.

Donnelly said of the incident: "I know Jackie was speaking to the fourth official (Iain Brines) and Tommy has breenged in and added whatever he wanted to add, and the next minute both of them are away.

"I spoke to Iain after and asked if it was really worthwhile sending both of them away, but he obviously decided it was."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
