Wright grounded despite win

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright insisted the 2-0 victory over Dundee United would have no bearing on the outcome of next month's Scottish Cup final between the teams.

Saints have won their last three Scottish Premiership matches against their Tayside rivals, but Wright was reading nothing into that statistic.

The St Johnstone manager was happy enough with Saturday's win, thanks to goals from Steven Anderson and Stevie May, but felt the victory should have been more emphatic with his side twice hitting the woodwork at McDiarmid Park.

"I would be happier if we'd beaten them four times," he said. "That's the bottom line.

"What today gets us is three points. We're now two points off Inverness and three points behind Dundee United. We still haven't given up hope of finishing fourth.

"But come May 17, it will be irrelevant that we've beaten them three times this season. We'll take positives out of this result, but what's gone before will count for nothing.

"I'm delighted with this result. I thought we were very good from the first whistle and controlled large chunks of the game against a very good side.

"If I'm going to be critical, we probably should have scored more goals. We were unlucky to hit the post twice in that respect.

"That's our 23rd clean sheet of the season, which is very pleasing as well. That's always a good basis. We looked solid and it was a quiet day for our defence all round."

United assistant boss Simon Donnelly felt the visitors never made a positive impression, and missed an opportunity to close in on Motherwell and Aberdeen in the race for Europa League qualifying places.

"We came here looking to chase the teams in front of us in the league," Donnelly said. "I don't think we started the game particularly well.

"In these kind of games, the first goal proves to be crucial. The quality of our play was disappointing."

I

expect Pulis to have a nice Christmas dinner with his family- probably all sitting around the table wearing Christmas themed baseball caps, before he gets the call. Realistically he could end up at any number of clubs, it'll be interesting to see which club folds first.

s a Liverpool fan, I personally hate Palace. My pick would probably be Arsenal, which is funny because it seems the vast majority of their own fans don't even like them right now.
