The US sportwear giant, who agreed a six-year deal with the Football Association last year, has plumped for the colour England famously wore when they won the World Cup in 1966 to replace Umbro's navy shirt.

Nike designers have gone for a polo-necked shirt - red apart from a white top button with red thread to replicate a St George cross - and white shorts with red socks.

The top features a gold crest to celebrate the FA's 150th anniversary and retains a gold star in honour of the '66 heroes.

Roy Hodgson's side will wear the kit for the first time next Sunday against Brazil in a friendly at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Nike also launched a yellow goalkeeper strip bearing a strong resemblance to the one Peter Shilton wore at Italia '90.

The company was criticised for the lack of red on England's new home kit when that was launched last week, with many observing that the strip resembled the one worn by old foes Germany in the 1960s and 1970s.
