The versatile defender is still only 25 years of age, so time remains very much on his side.

He was, however, handed a senior international bow in 2006 and has gone on to collect just 13 caps in seven years.

Injuries have held him back on a regular basis, with his latest return to action coming in City's 5-0 Capital One Cup thumping of Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

Richards believes a place in the England squad is achievable if he can stay fit and earn a regular role at club level, but concedes that others are ahead of him in Roy Hodgson's pecking order as the Three Lions chase a spot at next summer's World Cup in Brazil.

He said in The Sun: "I've been stuck on 13 caps for some time now - unlucky for some!

"I'm not sure what the answer is. I just need to get fit and play regularly.

"Danny Sturridge is an important player for England but he should have been playing for the last four years - he's a real talent.

"It's all about opinions but I hope Roy Hodgson will give me a chance.

"I want to go to Brazil in 2014 as much as the next man and as I can play right-back and centre-half, I can give the manager some options. But I can't help thinking that unless there are injuries, it won't happen.

"Picking up niggling injuries isn't helping so I need to keep fit, do my best and see what happens."

Annoying

Richards added on his frustrations at club level, which have seen him spend too much time on the sidelines: "It's been annoying because Matija Nastasic was out and then so was Vincent Kompany, so it would have been the perfect time for me to slot in at centre-back.

"Having said that, the manager didn't play me there in pre-season so maybe I'll only play at right-back.

"I've had niggling injuries at the wrong times and it can be frustrating because I know I could have done a job if I'd been asked to.

"We have some great central defenders at the club with Kompany, Nastasic and Joleon Lescott and we also have Martin Demichelis now so I can't see when I'll get a good run in central defence.

"Right-back is more realistic. We'll be playing two or three games a week and it's not physically possible for one player to keep up that sort of pace. Right-back is where I need to concentrate on."
