The FA has thrown its weight behind the national coach before a ball has been kicked in anger at this summer's World Cup.

That is because Horne considers just being part of the Brazil showpiece to be a success.

He claims qualification out of a testing group was the sole target, and is delighted to have seen Hodgson deliver on that front.

With progress being made, the former Liverpool and Fulham boss will now be given the chance to guide the Three Lions towards another European Championship - set to be staged in France in two years' time.

Horne told The Times: "For me personally, Roy is our manager to France and I'm happy with that, very happy with that.

"I think he's been brilliant. He's exactly what we hoped for."

Asked what would be considered an acceptable showing at the World Cup, with England having been placed in Group D alongside Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica, Horne added: "Pass mark? For me, personally, he's done it by getting through that group.

"We go with confidence. We'll prepare well. We go optimistic that we are going to enjoy it and play well.

"It's not an easy group, it's not an easy tournament.

"Roy stabilised the team and he's qualified us well in a tricky group.

"He kept his head convincingly, won the last two (against Montenegro and Poland). I've huge respect for him."
