Moyes: Saints players will carry on

Everton boss David Moyes does not expect Southampton's players to be unduly affected by the shock managerial change at St Mary's.

David Moyes: Unsure of effect manager change will have at Saints

The Toffees will provide the first opponents for new boss Mauricio Pochettino when they travel to the south coast for Monday's Barclays Premier League clash.

Pochettino, formerly in charge of Spanish side Espanyol, took over the Saints hotseat on Friday following the sudden sacking of Nigel Adkins.

The former Scunthorpe boss had achieved back-to-back promotions and appeared to have turned things around after a shaky start to life in the Premier League but that was not enough for ambitious chairman Nicola Cortese.

Adkins was hugely popular and the decision will have shocked fans and players alike, but Moyes does not think it will make his side's task easier on Monday.

The Scot said: "It's a really difficult one to judge because I actually think Southampton have been playing quite well. I'm not quite sure what effect it will have on the players but when you get a new manager you get on with it.

"I don't think players mope around too long about the manager, and I mean that with real respect for Nigel, but I think players just get on with their job. I would expect them to do that and it will be difficult.

"I don't know what the atmosphere will be like, I would have expected the supporters to have probably been in Nigel's camp because of the work he'd done there."

Pochettino, 40, kept Espanyol in the Primera Division for four seasons but was sacked after a poor start to this campaign.

Moyes thinks the former Argentina international's knowledge of Spain may have been a factor in his appointment, citing Swansea's recruitment of Michael Laudrup, who pulled off one of the signings of the season in bringing Michu to the Premier League.

Moyes said: "I've seen his teams play. I think Espanyol had periods where they did very well considering what was available to them.

"I don't know him personally but he looks as if he's a modern, young coach who will have a lot of knowledge of Spanish football, which will help him.

"You can see it's helped Swansea with Michael Laudrup coming in, it's given them an opportunity to have a little bit of a headstart on players at the lower level who could possibly step up and I would expect him to be very much the same."

Everton will be looking for three points to keep them hot on the heels of the top four.

The Toffees were frustrated last weekend when they were held to a goalless draw with Swansea, and Moyes wants his side to be more creative when the onus is on them.

"That's something we need to be a little bit better at," he said. "Over the years we've had to do that (sit back) against the better sides and we've had some great results, and teams are now doing that to us.

"We've found it a little bit difficult when it's happened if we've not got the goal. We kept plugging away (against Swansea) but on the day we just didn't have that bit of something that made the difference.

"We've tried to work on creating more chances, making better runs and passes for people to get in, better crosses, so we're continually trying, but there'll be days when it doesn't happen.

"I hope we won't have too many of those like last week because we can't afford to be picking up single points, we've got to try to be winning games."

Another area where Moyes would like to see improvement is at the back. Everton's tally of 26 goals conceded in 22 games is not bad but last weekend was their first clean sheet since September.

Moyes said: "We'd like to keep clean sheets because we need to try to start nicking a few games 1-0 if we have to. Who knows, it might be the second half of the season.

"We've tended to be a bit slow starters, we've actually started quite quickly this season but if we're looking to see what we could do better it would probably be have a few more clean sheets and hopefully that might come."

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.

afa has to be favourite for the Everton job now, surely :) He'll realise his ambition to live and work on Merseyside again, get the best out of whoever plays for them, maybe win some cups and be thoroughly loathed by the toffee fans. What's not to like? Go ead, Ken, gimajob!

hat is arguably the least inspiring England I have ever seen. There is not a single name in that list that makes me think I might actually want to watch this team. Not a one.
