Phil Jagielka: Adapting to a new style of play

David Moyes spent 11 years in charge of Everton before leaving for Manchester United earlier this summer and Toffees players had become accustomed to the emphasis being on fitness in pre-season.

But new boss Martinez has a reputation for his commitment to an attractive passing game and club skipper Jagielka admits it is a case of having to adapt.

"This pre-season has been drastically different," said Jagielka, quoted in the Daily Star.

"Normally you're working a lot harder off the ball - you're running around and the balls rarely come out.

"But the new manager has different views. We've got to start to adapt now to the way he wants us to play."

Everton were beaten by Austria Vienna at the weekend but bounced back with a 4-1 victory over Accrington Stanley on Wednesday.

e was right to leave, but not just because of the money City were coming into. If I remember rightly he had a reasonable amount of chances to shine at City, but he never passed the bloody ball. Loads of aimless dribbles and 40 yard shots and not much else. I would say that if he had learnt to be a bit more of a team player he may have done better at City.
