Gareth Barry: The 10th player to make 500 Premier League apperances

The on-loan Manchester City midfielder became only the 10th player in history to reach the landmark when starting in Monday night's game.

And England international Barry was happy while also being surprised at how quickly his career has passed since making his first appearance for Aston Villa in 1998.

"It's fantastic," Barry told Sky Sports 1. "I'm really lucky to be able to achieve 500 games. I've stayed injury free, touch wood, this long and I want to keep going and help Everton up this league table.

"Fifteen years ago I was making my debut. Time flies, especially when you're playing Premier League football, which is what you dream of as a child, so I want to try and play as long as possible."

Barry helped Everton to a 3-2 win against Newcastle, with Romelu Lukaku scoring twice either side of assisting a Ross Barkley goal in the first half.

Newcastle staged a second-half fightback through Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy but Everton held on to maintain their unbeaten record and move up to fourth in the Premier League.

"The first half, we started so well, with a fantastic tempo," said Barry. "We kept the ball well, we created so many chances and it could have been four or five.

"Fair play to Newcastle, they came out and made a game of it, as we thought they would, but we were slightly disappointed with the second-half performance.

"It's another big three points. We're still unbeaten and we want to keep that going as long as possible."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
