Liverpool travel to Goodison Park on November 23 and there is plenty of expectation ahead of the fixture, with both sides occupying lofty positions in the Premier League.

Everton are sixth in the table, just three points behind their second-placed near-neighbours, and Baines is relishing the first derby of the season.

But the full-back is glad to forget about all the excitement for a few days as he prepares for international friendlies against Chile and Germany.

"When a derby is coming up everyone gets excited and you just want to get out there and do it," Baines told everton tv.

"But we get to switch off from it to some extent because a lot of us go away for quite important games for our countries and hopefully we'll come back together and get a good result."

Roberto Martinez's men were held to a 0-0 draw by struggling Crystal Palace on Saturday, but Baines was satisfied with the team's defensive display.

"The positive is back-to-back clean sheets," he said. "It makes it six in 11 games, which is a decent ratio."

Seamus Coleman is also on international duty with the Republic of Ireland and accepts that Everton need a result against Liverpool to stay in touch with the pacesetters.

"It is a massive game and massive in terms of the table and we're all looking forward to that," he said.

"There is still the same excitement as my first one. Hopefully we can put on a good show."

lassic management. Build them up and then knock them back. Raise expectations and then dampen them. Create a dynamic where by you demand the most from your team, but where the team are given room to manoeuvre unexpected or unwanted results. Classy work by Van Gaal, he really reminds me a lot of me. A smart cookie, make no doubt.
