July 30, 1930: The very first World Cup final took place in Montevideo in front of 93,000 people, who were all in place two hours before kick-off. There was some disagreement about the match ball, with FIFA solving the problem by allowing Argentina to provide the ball for the first half, and Uruguay for the second. Oddly enough, Argentina won the first half but Uruguay won the second, turning a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 win. The following day was declared a national holiday in Uruguay, while the Argentine fans took it well by throwing stones at the Uruguayan consulate in Buenos Aires.

Gordon Banks, George Cohen, Jack Charlton, Bobby Moore (c), Ray Wilson, Nobby Stiles, Alan Ball, Bobby Charlton, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst, Roger Hunt - those names mean something to every man, woman and child in England who knows anything at all about football.

Never mind that the ball didn't strictly cross the line for the third goal, England won 4-2 and Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup trophy.
