"Michael Owen the footballer, if he ever really existed". There are no words. What exactly has he done to you? Is there any reason for this vitriolic, one-eyed blasting? Is it possible that a former winner of the Ballon D'or (the last English winner I think you'll find) retiring might evoke some positive sentiments? Strange article.

Isn't he the second or third highest goalscorer in English international history? Reducing his career to a handful of golden moments is harsh.

Paragraph 6 is the best summation of Owens career that I have come across, amid all the Winter, McNulty et al fawning platitudes. I think you overlook something significant in his character however - he may look magnolia on the surface, however there is a cold, single-mindedness under there. A selfishness that was necessary to be a lethal striker, but which also manifested itself through the self-serving, mercenary approach to his career. That is character. Not nice character, but proof that there is something in his make up beyond the banal. I doubt he will ever show that on TV though, but here's hoping.

Don't know how you can do an entire column on Owen and not mention this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqOxNspUPyE "Well done, he's thirteen!" Owen looks every inch the prize c*** in this video. Running round an empty stadium celebrating "goals" against a kid... shameful.

I'm getting a bit sick of the hatred this site clearly has for Michael Owen. How many other writers have you got left to stick the boot in? Anyway, Match Of The Day is a consumer-grade show; they'd have a hard time justifying a Sky Sports level of coverage to the average licence fee-payer. Owen is the perfect fit -- intelligent, camera-friendly, uncontroversial. I hope he gets that gig, if nothing else than to p*** people off.

@hump3 that is the absolute best statement on Michael Owen. I will never be able to take him seriously on MOTD as every time he looks at something off camera, I will assume he is keeping an eye out for the Kurgen.
