Have England Learnt Lessons From 2012?

It is less than two years since England faced Italy in tournament football. Adam Bate wonders whether England and Roy Hodgson have learnt their lessons from that night...

Oh come on, the way you are making it out is that England were given a pasting by Italy in 2012, 0-0. nil-nil. nothing each. we lost on penalties to a decent side but it was hardly Germany in 2010. The way the media are painting it, you'd think that Andrea Pirlo is a Machiavellian dark lord of the footballing arts, as opposed to a 35 year old quite-good footballer.

Not sure why you're writing Lallana's defensive abilities off. Look at his stats and you'll see that he is a relative tackiling and interception machine for Southampton. Yes, he presses higher up - and for the reason he'd be my choice for No. 10 and Pirlo's marker - but he would be a very responsible right winger if called on.

If I remember rightly, we drew 0-0 with Italy at Euro 2012 and lost on penalties, we then beat them in a friendly a month later. Italy haven't impressed that much recently, they haven't won a game since Sept 2013, they've drawn 6 and lost 1 and they haven't exactly been the best teams in the world they played (with the exception of Spain and Germany). Having said that, I don't think the current squad is as good as that last squad in 2012.

h Daniel. I could spend hours on this subject putting the world to rights. You can even take a step back and ask why football fans (and society in general) have this need to know that something will happen before it actually does. There are times this important, when it comes to things like war, food production and natural disasters. A man you've never met changing his job? Not so much.

reat article. Hits the nail on the head. Encapsulates why I don't read tabloid newspapers anymore. The only thing worse is the 'told you so first' headline when they get lucky.
