jericho, Boll##. Why is that when United are on the verge of winning the League that some people say that everyone else is s##te instead of United just been well very good. If City comeback & win the League will every team still be sh##e or will City be just amazing.

@Jericho, United are heading for a record points total - so while I agree Chelsea have been all over the place, but in mitigation they are not yet a developed team owing to such a dramatic shift in personel in the summer. City on the other hand have not been as consistent as last season but they are on course for around 80 pts, with a maximum of 89. 80pts would have won you the title in around a third of the EPL seasons past (post 95 season where the numbers reduced) - 89 would win you over half. It is not simply a case of the opposition being crap this season, it is the case that United's consistency has been remarkable.

david mac: While I am a supporter of Leeds United I never said we (they?) were any good. In fact we can't even get in to that league so that tells you how bad we are! You have to admit though that Chelsea, Citeh and the rest haven't been up to it!

@ jericho...Really? That is large coming from a fan of a team viewing from the lofty heights of mid-table mediocrity in the Championship just 2 weeks removed from a 4-0 beat down at the hands of one of these s**te challengers.

Nearly all of the other Prem challengers being s**te at the same time is the REAL key to Uniteds success alongside RVP surviving 2 assassination attempts, firstly by a ball and secondly by a camera pit

the difference between this season and last is simple. Last season, by January we were down to three fit central midfielders, two of whom are over 35 and one of whom was occasionally required to fill in for our equally injury-plagued central defenders. This season, the addition of van Persie and Kagawa allows for much more variation in formation and personnel, and having Cleverley and Jones fit again means that Fergie has many more options available, so much so that even with all three of our out-and-out wingers having pretty terrible seasons we're still sitting comfortably at the top of the table. The fact that young players like Rafael and Jones are a season older and wiser and are improving in leaps and bounds doesn't do us any harm either. The idea that a man who has consistently been the best manager in the country, winning titles regularly for 20 years has suddenly in the last two months learned the art of rotating his team to get the best out of them is frankly laughable. Last season Fergie simply didn't have the players to rotate. Vidic, Fletcher, Cleverley and Anderson all missed much of the second half of the season. Several other players had absences of a few months. Its difficult to rotate when you've only got three players for two positions and two of them are footballing OAPs. Admittedly, that does seem to make the decision not to give Pogba a run-out all the more baffling, but we don't know everything that goes on at Carrington.

This is exactly United's strength, they have 25 players that cover around 50-60 potential positions, can play a variety of formations and a number of roles. Think of all the players in the United squad capable of playing across different areas of the pitch and you see why Ferguson gets the maximum out of his squad. They rocked up at the Bernabeu and played two of their strikers on the wing as a defensive strategy. They're a tactially incredibly flexible squad which is why reports of them being supposedly average are infuriating.

@teeball> No doubt but its still a small number when compared to "All humans who have ever lived on earth and will be born in the future". I consider myself fortunate to have been a United fan during the great Sir Alex Fergusson Era.

He's always been one of the best when it comes to squad rotation, resting the most important players at the right time and keeping peripheral players motivated. This is nothing new. It will mean some games will be lost along the way, but to suggest he's better at it now than he was in November is completely misjudging things and taking a very short-term view on what has been a long-term policy. Not one of your best articles..
