The reason I asked about when the trophy can be awarded is that I expect United to have effectively won the title well before the last game but their last game is away at West Brom so only 3,000 plus United fans would be able to be present at The Hawthorns to see the trophy presented officially. They could arrange a friendly in the next week for a celebration but they might be playing in another final then possibly, maybe....

I do think Benitez was given the impossible job. The fans never wanted him, and the owner undermined his position by labelling him an "interim manager" in the first place. WE'eve seen Chelsea's players hawk managers out of the job before. Scolari, AVB; both managers with huge success elsewhere, but both humped out of the job because they were unable to get the best from Chelsea's squad for one reason or another.

I honestly think Benitez was taking over an impossible job. The fans and their A4 protests as well as the interim tag ensured he wouldn't have full control over the players.
When the players essentially know your gone by season end, they are hardly going to listen and follow all instructions, especially when asked to make sacrifices for the betterment of the team.
As for Mancini, everyone is aware of my opinion of him...subpar manager who needs to spend 100-200 mil a summer to compete with a manager who spends 50. Its shameful that he keeps blaming the summer transfers and his players and doesn't try to shoulder any of the blame.

What a "voraciously humdrum" article this is.

@ all - you cant award a trophy until it's won. Convention if it is won before the end of the season is to wait for the last home game.

I am sure that @GVMUFC is right. If a team wins the title with game/s to spare, the trophy is presented to them at their last home game, even if that is not the last game of the season.

No, that's not right about the trophy only being presented on the final day. Usually it is presented after the winners final home game. Or the final (away) game if it goes down to the last day.

Yup the last game of the season rule for league trophies is there. It makes for pretty awkward viewing though as most of the hysteria would have already passed and it makes me feel like I'm watching any award ceremony instead of the champions being crowned. The best title celebrations we've had recently have to be City's last year and United's in 2008, both won and crowned then and there on the last day of the season. Don't get me wrong though there's no way I'd want it to get to that stage this season with the points we've garnered.

I was unaware of the rule saying the trophy can only be presented on thr final day. Are we all sure of this? I'm not arguinig, or denying, just wondered if this is documented anywhere. gongclough, Benitez cannot be criticised for the flaws in the Chelsea squad. However, given as those flaws are small, and the squad is exfeptinally strong, he can be criticised for their diablical form since he took the job. When he took over, I thought he would do well. His subsequet failure has been the biggest surprise of the season, for me.

@Dactyl, certainly... Only on the last day can a trophy be awarded. However, you can be called champions already before the last game if it's mathematically proven that you can't be overtaken.
