My Middlesbrough-supporting family certainly seemed to be big fans of Steve McClaren. I'm not sure why you'd say his acclaim on Teesside was limited. When was the last time you actually went out and polled the locals for their opinion or are you just taking a wild stab in the dark with that one? If you're going to try and be positive about someone, at least properly research the positive aspects.

He did an excellent job with Middlesbrough and Twente first time round, but failed with England, Nottingham Forest and Wolfsburg. The problem we have in England, our mentality, is that once you've failed or been sacked somewhere then suddenly you're damaged goods. A lot of the time I see people saying "How does this guy still gets jobs?" and talking about "proven managerial failures" when assessing whoever their club has just appointed. I was listening to Gabriele Marcotti on some football programme and he made an interesting point when he explained the Italian mentality- firstly he doesn't buy the sympathetic way we treat a manager who has just been sacked and secondly the way we then write coaches or managers off after that's happened. Italian clubs sack coaches more readily but they don't put people on the scrapheap, they employ out of work managers and coaches more readily as well. The assumption there is that, even if you've failed somewhere, you must have learned from that and the experience makes you a better manager in the long run. We certainly take a different point of view here in the UK, where the dreaded sack seems to leave a manager permanently tarnished by it.

"...acclaim was limited on Teesside..." what utter nonsense, Boro fans were gutted when he left to become England manager. General consensus of opinion on Steve is that he is an excellent coach, but not a very good manager, in the modern sense. By that I mean that he is not media savvy and is not a political animal by nature; players like him and enjoy working with him, but when it comes to communicating with anyone other than the players he falls down. Ultimately, if you look solely at his CV, you will find a document that a lot of managers would sacrifice a limb for.

Good article PC! I'm sure it must have been very difficult for you to write anything positive about Steve! It's interesting that Steve is considered a failure/bad manager mainly due to the England spell but then you have a lot of folks, including at this fine website, celebrating the likes of Martinez, Brendan, etc. even though those managers have yet to achieve anything besides "getting to and staying in the PL" Even excluding the Eredivisie win, McClaren's success with Middlesbrough was on par with what Hodgson achieved with Fulham, and better than what the current media darling - M Laudrup - has achieved so far. Let's give Steve some credit where its due.

I imagine Twente's fans are grateful and appreciative for his first spell in charge, while Middlesbrough fans must, in hindsight, see his tenure as something of a golden era.
