It's The Very Best Way To Lose

If you are going to lose the biggest game of your season, you're far, far better being left with a sense of injustice than a sense that you are being left behind. It's easier...

@dearg I did say that the Real game was an exception, if you'd taken the time to read beyond the first sentence. No-one's saying Liverpool fans can't comment, I'm saying they can't exactly comment from a position of strength when you look at how their team is doing.

@red007 i had the pleasure of watching both legs and they basically confirmed what most of us already suspected when the draw was made and that is that both teams were fairly evenly matched and if i was to judge it from the start of the first leg up until the sending off in the second leg i would say United were probably the better side. If it was just a simple matter of picking a fantasy team and then counting the number of players you have from each team in order to decide the outcome of a match then there would be little point in most games actually taking place on grass. An example would be the recent FA Cup tie. Did Oldham deserve to beat Liverpool ? Yes,on the day they did. Would any Oldham players make it into the Liverpool team ? Nope. Mourinho does indeed have a record of making good substitutions but bringing on Modric when you are a goal down and need to score and the other team are down to ten men is not the work of a genius !

My big concern, watching (and feeling) that sense of shock around the team for the remainder of the game after the red, is whether United will be able to pick themselves up for a massive game at the weekend. If they lose that, then the league becomes more important, higher pressure, and increases the risk of another collapse like last season.

@red007, Jesus wept, I have not idea where to even begin with that post. That you assess the teams based on names on a peice of paper tells me all I need to know..............

dearg, I think you're on the money, to be fair. Whether you agree with the red card or not, firstly we failed to finish our chances, and secondly we moped around for 12 minutes aftr Nani walked and allowed Madrid to get their noses in front. After that we set about trying to win the game, but by then it was too late. We took our eyes off the ball at the very moment that we needed our players to be switched on.

Sarah Winterburn got it wrong, once again. Jose Mourinho was just polite. The better team won! From the current Manchester United team, only Vidic would play in Real Madrid's first team. RVP and Ronney would make the bench. The rest would play in the B team. Manchester United did not have to lose the game because they were playing with 10 men (at home). Jose made the correct substitution (as always), and United had no plan B, and surrendered. I am sure Sarah still remembers the game at the Camp Nou, when Chelsea were playing with 10 men, Barcelona were leading 2:0, and still Chelsea were victorious at the end (3:2 on aggregate). The reason for the different outcome is that on that day the Chelsea team showed true grit and class while the current Manchester United team is a bunch of pussies, unlike the great United team in 1999.

@moondance - it's intelligent comments like yours that make me keep visiting forums. Intelligent and balanced, and interested in the issues rather than cheap points scoring. Respect, and I couldn't have put any of it better myself. Just to add a response to @dealgansyd, it does look like Nani pushes his foot into Arbeloa but I'd say that it's impossible in Nani's position to pull away given his body position, so it's a kneejerk reaction caused by the shock of turning around and seeing Arbeloa at the end of his foot, that ends up making the whole thing look worse. To say there was intent you would have to ignore the decent spirit of the 150 minutes the teams had already played, ignore Nani's nature (bit of a drama queen but he's not malicious), and ignore the fact that he's in mid air thinking he's bringing a ball down with nobody else around.

solskjaer99- You lost the game precisely because you did 'mope'. Indeed your entire team seemed to stop playing for 15 mins and allowed Real to win the tie. Sure it was a very controversial decision and your are right that Utd teams usually deal with most setbacks thrown their way but last night they just collapsed in the face of a challenge. Also does the manager refusing to speak to anyone after the game qualify as moping also? Finally while some of the comments here are undoubtedly bitter, Utd fans cant crow about playing in the biggest game in world football and then expect no other supporters to comment about how the game turned out, least of all on website dedicated to discussing football!

dealgansyd, the suggestion that the referee sent Nani off for that extra movement you mention is not true mainly because the match officials confirmed he was sent off for dangerous play, not for violent conduct. So the question is this; do you think he endangered an opponents safety? Or did he merely fail to show sufficient consideration for an opponents safety? Because one carries the threat of a booking, whilst the other carries a red card. Personally I think it falls on the side of wreckless, as opposed to dangerous, although you could argue that to be wreckless is dangerous anyway. To be honest though, my beef isn't with the red card; it's with the lack of finishing refinement on the night. We could, and should, have scored more because the chances we created deserved more than they got.

Lets remember that Pool fans think its OK for players to STAMP on opponents when they are going out of Europe....but not to make an attempt to control the ball!.......anyone else think they are just a tad bitter? must be the TWO beatings we gave them this season.

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
