Spurs Teetering Between Triumph & Tragedy

Spurs' crushing defeat to Inter will have given encouragement to Arsenal in the race for the top four. With a quarter-final to come, the pressure is really on AVB and his team...

I personally couldn't give a toss about the Europa League. The priority is coming third or fourth. As so many have pointed out in this article and on other websites following the Inter game, Friedal and Gallas won't play in the league (again ever) and barring injury or suspension, Bale, Lennon and Demble will play every game for the rest of the season. I suspect that Adebayor and Defoe will rotate for the rest of the season, as will Dempsey and Siggurdsson. I'm really not too concerned about Arsenal and what they do in the league. We control our destiny. Wouldn't be overly surprised if the 7 point gap becomes 9 after this weekend.

@KevinBoatang, I don't actually disagree with anything you've said there. Adebayor hasn't played well at all. He's the ultimate confidence player and he has no confidence, mainly because he knows in AVB's mind he's second string to Defoe. I cannot understand the adulation of Defoe at WHL; he starts every season (or stint at a new club) with 8-10 goals then goes off the boil for the rest of the season and never, ever reaches 20 goals a season and provides zero assists because he's so damned greedy. Probably both need replacing, to be blunt. Dempsey and Siggurdsson are indeed squad players but, much like Kranjcar, Piennar and others in the past, don't get enough game time now to get or stay sharp, once they do appear for three or four games in a row you see an improvement in their performances. AVB's squad rotation is generally very good, but I think he just needs to sort out a plan B that makes these players comfortable when they do appear. I think we can all agree that Livermore isn't good enough and that isn't doing him a disrespect, but, just like Ramsey at Arsenal, if the players aren't good enough for the level the clubs want to achieve/stay at then they have to be replaced.

Gallas and Adebayor...add Bentley as well. Where do these utterly terrible players with horrendous attitudes come from? Do all 3 have anything in common?

@david_hodson slightly odd comment to be fair. Adebayor has played when not injured or suddenly going to the ACN and has been absolute, utter toilet. You are the single Spurs fan I have read, heard or know that has said the opposite of that. Dempsey and Sigurdsson have both played on a regular basis, the fomer being injured, the latter being on the left as Bale has moved inside, I'm at a loss as to why you think they haven't been playing let alone aren't rated. They are squad players in comparison to Bale, Dembele, Lennon, Sandro etc etc.

@ Vaselinegang... I agree Brad has been great and deserves uptmost respect for all he has done and achived. However (liverpool kick aside) Hugo just give you so much confidence when he is there. He's so quick off his line and if we are going to play that high line, Brad is simply not suited.. If a player get's through, it's a simple job to take your time, steady yourself and just roll it past him. (2nd goal last night, Leeds away) However with Hugo he's sprinting out, in your face, forcing players to rush and hence pulling out saves that win us matches (West Ham away, Newcastle home for example) Walker does deserve a chance, but is having that 2nd season blip, in some ways similar to Vermarlen, both are frustrating the hell out of their fans, especially as they have shown they can be so much better...

Okay chaps, voice of reason time. Everyone calm down. This game was reminiscent of the famous 03/04 Deportivo v Milan game. Depor go to the San Siro and get thwacked 4 -1 and dump Milan out at the Riazor 4 - nil. Ancelotti was the coach and I can remember him saying the tie would have been over if only they had scored. I can remember him sending on attacker after attacker trying to get that one goal that would see the side through. Admittedly AVB was a touch more cautious but the approach was the same to try to score and end the tie. In the end we got it. It was an admirable but fraught with danger all of this will be forgotten if we reach Amsterdam.

AVB prefers to play a high line in defence. This is fine, as long as 1) Keeper / Sweeper Lloris is in goal & 2) We have defenders who can turn quicker than a double decker bus. Last night we had neither. Brad Friedel is an excellent keeper and Gallas has been an excellent defender, but both are too old/slow to play this system. AVB either needs to retire these 2, or play to their strengths. He had the same problem with John Terry at Chelski, Terry wouldn't/couldn't adapt, and started a mutiny, and we all saw what happened there. AVB is right in his strategy, just wrong in his selections. Inter were able to come at us last night with confidence, mainly because they didn't have the pacy counters of Bale or Lennon to contend with, they looked a bit more wary once Aaron came on. Also on that note - in the last year or so, we have sold Krancjar and Dos Santos, and loaned out Bentley, Townsend and Falque, just to play Dembele on the right in Lennons absence? Doesen't make sense. Agreed with most posts on here regarding Livermore and Ade (hopefully his tap in might spark some form)
